Frame Relay has grown in popularity because its very nature accepts the fact that data communications traffic can be very bursty in nature. In order to utilize a Frame Relay circuit you need a frame aware CSU/DSU. The most common applications are all data but with the proper equipment both data and voice communications are possible. It is even possible to have voice transmission over what would otherwise be just a data circuit, thereby significantly reducing costs. Many manufacturers offer such equipment. The factors that separate one from another are such things as expandability, ease of installation, features, and of course cost.
