Search Engines & DirectoriesToday there are several tools to search the vast information found on the Web. Most people refer to the whole group as "search engines". In reality some are search engines and others are enormous indexes or directories of data. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type. If you know of a specific item or part number that you are trying to find a true search engine will probably do the best job. If however you do not know the specific item the structure of directories can help you narrow down the choices and find the information you need. The directory approach is generally modified by humans. It therefore takes longer to change. The true search engine will spider the site and compile a list of words or terms automatically which can make it faster to update. None of the directories or search engines are ever completely up to date. The information can be as much as 6 months out of date. This of course is improving everyday.
